Space Shuttle Endeavour Launches

After several delays due to bad weather, Space Shuttle Endeavour finally blasted off today at 6:03 PM (EST).

Julie Payette, (one of the crew members), and I worked together at the BNR (Bell Northern Research) lab on Nun's Island, Montreal, Quebec (1992).

Although we did not worked on the same projects, I did get a chance to know her. She is a very bright person and very easy to speak to. When she announced she was joining the space program, BNR held a huge media event for her and every body was there to meet and congratulate her.

Julie's first task aboard the shuttle is going to use the robotic arm to examine the underbelly of the shuttle to make sure everything is OK after the launch. Her actual task will be to transfer the payload from the shuttle to the space station.

Did you know that it takes about 8.5 minutes from launch to reach space? It will take several days to get to the space station.
